In this spring newsletter, we highlight upcoming events, a newly published guidance document, an opportunity to apply for 3Rs research funding, and an international 3Rs prize.
We invite you to
participate in a full-day scientific seminar dedicated to New Approach Methodologies in research and drug development.
The seminar will take place on 24 September at the World Trade Center in Stockholm.
The programme will feature presentations from Swedish researchers working with New Approach Methodologies across a range of research areas and applications in drug development. The day will also include a poster session, with opportunities for poster presenters to give short oral presentations.
We particularly welcome doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and early-career scientists, and encourage them to take this opportunity to network with other Sweden-based researchers working in related fields.
Participation is free of charge, but registration is required.
Guidance on the 3Rs for research funding organisations
Organisations that fund research play a key role in advancing the 3Rs and are therefore an important target group for the 3R Center’s work. We regularly engage with research funders and have previously published a 3Rs statement that has been endorsed by several organisations.
To further support research funding organisations in their 3Rs efforts, the 3Rs Center has now published guidance on how funders can contribute to increased implementation of the 3Rs principle, while recognising that organisations differ in mandates, focus areas and practical conditions.
Please note that the guidance is available in Swedish only.
If you work in a research funding organisation and have questions related to the 3Rs, you are welcome to contact the 3Rs Center at 3Rcenter@jordbruksverket.se for further dialogue.

Webinar on the Swedish Board of Agriculture’s new regulations on animal research
The Swedish Board of Agriculture has recently adopted new regulations governing animal research activities. The revision was carried out in order to implement amendments to Annexes III and IV of Directive 2010/63/EU. At the same time, the authority conducted a broader review of the regulatory framework as a whole.
On Laboratory Animal Day, 24 April 12:00–13:00 CEST, the 3Rs Center invites you to a webinar where Camilla Ekenstierna from the Swedish Board of Agriculture will present the new regulations.
Please note that the webinar will be held in Swedish.
Save the date: Annual meeting for Animal Welfare Bodies
The 2026 meeting for Swedish Animal Welfare Bodies will take place in Gothenburg on 15 October. Save the date in your calendar, and feel free to contact the 3Rs Center at 3Rcenter@jordbruksverket.se if you have suggestions for topics you would like to discuss.
Call for funding: Research to replace animal experimentation
Forska Utan Djurförsök awards grants for scientific research aimed at replacing animal experiments. Their annual call is now open and will close on 15 September.
On Forska Utan Djurförsök’s website, you can read more about the call and find information on eligibility and assessment criteria.
The UK National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) invites researchers to apply for its annual international 3Rs Prize. The prize is awarded for a research paper describing outstanding and original work that has, or has the potential to have, a major impact on the replacement, reduction or refinement of animal experimentation.
Eligible papers must have been published in a peer‑reviewed journal between 1 September 2022 and 1 September 2025.
Find more information about the 3Rs Prize and how to apply on the NC3Rs website, and submit your publication by Monday, 4 May 2026.
The Swedish 3Rs Center is the executive body of the National Committee
for the Protection of Animals used for Scientific Purposes and part of the
Swedish Board of Agriculture.
